Football Round-up: Liverpool Trophy Lift Delayed Again?

The biggest game since the Premier League’s return was held at Stamford Bridge last week which saw Chelsea take on Manchester City.

Not only was this a vital match for both of these teams who are trying to secure a top four Champions League place, but the result could also hand Liverpool the title without them even having to play.

Only a win for City in the capital would be enough to keep the Reds waiting a little longer for that title; any other outcome and it would all be over…

The Blues took the lead in the 36th minute after a defensive mistake from Benjamin Mendy gave Christian Pulisic a clear run on goal, which he calmly slotted past goalkeeper Ederson to put his team 1-0 up inside the first half.

City were definitely the more dominant side after the break which proved to be the case as an absolutely stunning free-kick from none other than Kevin De Bruyne rocketed into the top corner of the net in the 55th minute to give Manchester City the equaliser.

There continued to be plenty of chances at both ends of the pitch, one of those being a follow up shot by Pulisic which controversially looked to be cleared off the line by the hand of City midfielder Fernandinho.

Referee Stuart Attwell turned to VAR for some assistance which resulted in the Brazilian international being shown a red card in the 77th minute, with Chelsea being awarded a penalty for the handball incident.

This was put away beautifully by Willian, giving his team a 2-1 victory on the night and ensuring that they came away with all three points.

This was a great result for the Blues and one that takes them another step closer to competing in the Champions League next season.

Liverpool Crowned Champions

Manchester City’s 2-1 defeat at Chelsea meant that Liverpool FC were crowned the Premier League champions for the first time in 30 years.

This is Liverpool’s 19th title and their first since the season of 1989-90.

Coming into this game, Jurgen Klopp’s men needed just one more victory to seal their fate, but as a result of City’s failure, it means that it’s now impossible for them to be numerically caught.

After hearing the news, Klopp conducted a very emotional interview with Sky Sports, saying; ‘’I have no words, it’s unbelievable’’ and promised that both he and his players ‘’will enjoy this with our supporters when we can’’.

When will Liverpool lift the trophy?

Liverpool had originally been scheduled to have their trophy presentation at Anfield when they host Chelsea on July 18th.

However, now that Chelsea have progressed into the next FA Cup stage, this will more than likely be pushed back into the following week, meaning that the Reds will have to wait a little longer to officially be presented with the Premier League trophy.

FA Cup Results

Manchester United booked their place into the FA Cup semi-finals last weekend as they sealed a victory over 10 man Norwich City at Carrow Road.

United took the lead in the 51st minute through striker Ighalo, but it wasn’t long after that the Canaries found an equaliser through their young starlet midfielder Todd Cantwell, who pulled a goal back for his team in the 75th minute.

After the equaliser, Norwich looked the more likely of the teams to go on and find a late winner in the game, but this dramatically changed when Swiss centre back Timm Klose saw red in the 89th minute.

This took the match into extra-time with both teams evenly balancing each other out.

With the game slowly coming to an end and being just minutes away from penalties, the Red Devils captain Harry Maguire reacted quickest to turn the ball into the back of the net at the far post, which came just moments after he had a header brilliantly saved by the Canaries keeper Tim Krul.

This proved to be the winning goal for Manchester United who clinched it right at the death, although it was a performance that Norwich should most definitely be proud of.

Elsewhere, Arsenal gained a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United, Manchester City won comfortably 2-0 against Newcastle United and Chelsea had a slight 1-0 win against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.

FA Cup Semi-Final Draw

Both of these fixtures are due to be played at Wembley during the weekend of 18/19 July.

The final of the FA Cup will also be played at this venue, currently scheduled for August 1st.
