Your Weekly Football Round-up

Summarising the latest happenings within the football world - here is your weekly football round-up.

Premier League

Liverpool’s unbeaten run came to a dramatic end over the weekend with a shocking 3-0 defeat to relegation contenders Watford at Vicarage Road.

Had the Reds have claimed victory in this game, they would have made history as the longest winning run in the English top flight; but this clearly wasn’t to be as they never even really got going against a Watford side who delivered a truly superb performance from start to finish.

Hornets winger Sarr displayed a very impressive individual performance which was fully justified as he was the man who scored the opening two goals for the home team.

Liverpool didn’t really create anything during the game and never looked like themselves, which was demonstrated later in the game as right back Trent Alexander Arnold made a huge defensive error allowing Watford captain Troy Deeney to capitalise on this and add a third goal for his team.

This result won’t affect the Reds’ title hopes as they are still 22 points clear at the top, but this was a famous victory and a huge 3 points for the Hornets as they have now just about climbed out of the relegation zone.

Elsewhere, Wolves pulled off a remarkable comeback at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday after a 3-2 victory against Spurs.

Tottenham took the lead on two occasions in the five-goal-thriller, with goals from Steven Bergwijn and Serge Aurier; but Matt Doherty and Diogo Jota brought the Wanderers back level on both occasions.

Just as the match looked set to end in a draw, Nuno Espirito Santo’s side found a second wind as Mexican striker Raul Jimenez scored the winner in the 73rd minute after a smart finish with his left foot which gave Spurs keeper Gazzaniga no chance.

This victory now takes Wolves above Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League table and has given them hope that they can push on for a Champions League place.

They are now sitting just three points outside of the top four.

Building on his solid season, Jimenez sealed the winner for Nuno’s side against Spurs.

EFL Cup Final

Manchester City got their hands on a third successive Carabao Cup trophy last weekend after claiming a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa in the EFL final at Wembley Stadium.

The Blues looked to have a largely comfortable grip on the game as goals from both Sergio Aguero and Rodri put them 2-0 ahead inside 30 minutes.

Whilst City dominated the match, a spirited effort from Villa pulled them a goal back as striker Samatta headed in after a cross from Anwar El Ghazi just four minutes before half time.

The Boys in Claret & Blue came so close to finding an equaliser right at the death when Bjorn Engels had his header tipped onto the woodwork after a magnificent save from City keeper Claudio Bravo.

Despite this final push, it ended up being the last chance of the game meaning that yet again, Pep Guardiola’s side were able to add another deserved piece of silverware to their collection.

Manchester City have now lifted the Carabao Cup 4 times out of the last 5 years.

Champions League Round-Up

There was plenty more midweek action from the round of 16 in the Champions League last week, which saw a brilliant second half performance from Bayern Munich to absolutely stun Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Taking these three away goals back to Germany with them for the second leg has put them in good stead and made it nearly impossible for the Blues; but if Chelsea are going to find a way back into this match they will have to be on their best form to try and gain a positive result.

Elsewhere, Napoli and Barcelona cancelled each other out with a 1-1 draw at the San Paolo Stadium, Lyon have taken the slightest of leads into the next fixture after a 1-0 victory over Juventus and Manchester City narrowly defeated Real Madrid 2-1 at the Bernabeu - in what turned out to be a tactical masterclass by Pep Guardiola.

The second legs of these fixtures will take place over the weeknights of Tuesday 17th and Wednesday 18th March.
